1625 Independent People prevents youth homelessness in the South West and has been helping 16-25 year olds reboot their lives for over 30 years. With around 100 staff in four locations, we provided housing and support to around 2000 young people last  year.

We’re one of the brightest youth organisations in the South West, leaders in our field, no other organisation in the area has the same wealth of experience.

Terms, conditions and benefits:

  • Hours per week: Full time 37.5 hours a week. 

  • Contract type: Permanent

  • Pay: £22,658 to £24,964 per year (NJC Scale 25 - 28), starting at the bottom of the scale

  • 30 days' annual leave plus Bank Holidays (pro rata)

  • Free Health Scheme with UK Healthcare 

  • Pension - Employer contributes 4% and employees contribute a minimum of 0.8%.  The Employee contribution will increase to 2.4% from 1 April 2018 (see Summary of T&Cs below). 

  • There is a requirement to work flexibly as required, which will include regular evening and weekend work on a rota basis (one weekend day every 3 weeks and 2 early evening sessions a week).

  • You will need to travel across Bristol so you must have either a full driving licence and access to a vehicle or the equivalent ability to travel with reasonable adjustments.

Where and who?

You’ll be based at Kingsley Hall, Old Market, Bristol.


You’ll be working in the Participation and Learning (PaL) Team and line managed by the Participation and Learning Team Manager. 


The PaL team are very supportive of each other and through reflective practice we are always learning from our own and each other’s experiences.


Our work is rooted in providing support within a Psychologically Informed Environmental framework known as PIE.


The role

The Participation and Learning Team works across the whole organisation providing personal development activities for our service users and volunteers.


The work with service users covers everything from engagement activities – outreach, socials and trips, to targeted support to get into Education, Employment and training and programmes that enable young people to take part on the design and delivery of our services. We also have a number of volunteer programmes that enable the involvement of the wider community.


Your role as the Engagement and Learning (E&L) Coordinator will place you in a key position within the team. You will have the opportunity to shape and deliver the engagement and learning programme offer so that young people accessing our services have access to a wide range of opportunities that supports their personal development and ability to live independently. 


 A typical day will include:

1.    Working directly with young people supporting them to design, access and participate in developmental opportunities

2.    Working with staff and volunteers to set goals and objectives and review progress

3.    Analysing data to ensure that work is recorded accurately and to monitor and report on performance

4.    Liaising with managers and staff in other teams to develop programmes that address young people’s needs.

About you

You have empathy and understanding of the needs of homeless young people, young people leaving care, and the barriers they face. You like being around and working with young people.

You are able to develop positive working relationships with sometimes challenging young people and work in a genuinely participatory manner. A good understanding of the varying needs of young people accessing our services, will enable you to develop activities that engage young people at different stages of their journey.

You have experience of delivering group work sessions that are well structured with clear learning outcomes. You are clear about risk and safeguarding when planning activities.

You are proactive and solution focused with strong leadership skills that include demonstrable experience of planning and managing the work of others (staff or volunteers).

You have excellent IT and data management skills that enable you to track and monitor work and produce accurate reports.
