Bristol Youth MAPS

Bristol Youth MAPS is a new service commissioned by Bristol City Council (BCC) and jointly delivered by BCC with 1625 Independent People. The service focuses on the prevention of youth homelessness by working with young people who present as homeless or at risk of homelessness to help them to remain in or return to their family home where it is safe to do so. It will also help young people to find safe accommodation where it's not safe to return home, or when attempts to do so are unsuccessful.

When you contact us we will ask you about your situation, advise you about your options and in some instances make an appointment to see you. If we see you we will look into all possible options for preventing homelessness. We will also be able to refer you to other specialist workers who might be able to help you with things like finding work or training, health issues, offending etc.

Why Bristol Youth MAPS?

  • Housing in Bristol is very expensive, even if you have a stable, well-paying job. If it’s safe for a young person to live in the family home this is usually the best option until they can afford to leave home in a planned way and rent somewhere either with others or alone.
  • Bristol Youth MAPS is a safe and welcoming service that supports young people to develop the skills they need to live independently and with others. This may include, where appropriate, the family home. Bristol Youth MAPS supports young people to develop positive relationships and helps them on their journey into learning and employment.
Bristol Youth MAPS supports in these ways:

Mediation – helping young people and their families to talk things through and find solutions.

Assessment – working out what young people need to prepare for independence and having a safe place to live.

Prevention – intervening early to prevent young people from becoming homeless.

Support – helping young people to develop positive relationships and progress on their journey to learning, employment and living independently.

The flagship service in the city centre brings together 1625ip’s services around youth homelessness prevention and support with Local Authority Housing Advisors and Social Work statutory work and Caring in Bristol’s Short Term Supported Lodgings Service.

Alongside the commissioned services, 1625ip will also provide additional externally funded services with BIG Lottery Funded services Future 4 Me and Ask Us and support for young people to access the Private Rented Sector with Deposit Bonds and Grants from Yorkshire Building Society.

How to access the service

If you are a young person aged 16-21 and are currently homeless or at risk of homelessness (or if you are working with a young person who fits these criteria) please fill in our online referral form or call us on 0117 332 7111.

We primarily work with young people aged 16-21, who can self refer or be referred by an agency using the form above.
We only work with young people over 21 (up to and including 24) where they have significant support needs which mean they are unlikely to be able to successfully engage with an adult focused service.
If you are a worker wishing to refer a young person that fits these criteria and who is either homeless or at risk of homelessness, please fill in this online agency referral form or call us on 0117 332 7111.
